Becoming an assessor has many benefits, including broadening your professional horizons, contributing to self-regulation of optometry and promote public safety.
WHAT’S A QA ASSESSOR?
As part of the College’s Quality Assurance Program, each year, a group of optometrists is randomly selected to submit patient records for review by the Quality Assurance Committee (QAC). This process promotes accountability and helps members enhance patient care and management. QA Assessors are the ones who conduct these reviews. Their job is to provide a positive learning experience that is directly related to each optometrist’s practice.
WHAT DOES THE ROLE ENTAIL?
A QA assessor reviews 25 patient records per member. The reviews are conducted using set criteria to ensure that standards of practice have been met in accordance with the Optometric Practice Reference and that patient management is optimal across the profession. The assessor then submits a report to the QAC. The entire assessment process is completed online through a secure platform.
The number of assessments can vary from year to year. On average, an assessor will submit five to 10 reports in a 12-month period. Short Record Assessments take approximately five hours, plus report writing time. Complete Record Assessments take approximately 12 hours. WHO SHOULD APPLY?
We are looking for engaged, enthusiastic optometrists who are:
- in good standing with the College
- interested in assisting their peers to improve and enhance knowledge, skills, and judgment across the profession
- possess a strong sense of professional responsibility and commitment to peer support and public protection
- knowledgeable about current professional standards of practice and College policies
- experienced with computer programs
- able to write clearly and concisely and provide constructive feedback
- not involved in a complaint/investigation where action was taken
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY APPLICATION IS SUCCESSFUL?
A mandatory virtual training session will be held in on September 10, 2021. Newly trained assessors and returning assessors will be able to claim eight Other Learning Opportunities CE credits for their attendance at the training session.
