Unauthorized or Illegal Optometry Practice

Only those people registered (licensed) with the College of Optometrists of Ontario can practise optometry in Ontario, use the titles “Optometrist” or “OD”, and hold themselves out as a person qualified to practise optometry in the province.

Restriction of title “doctor”

A person cannot use the title “doctor”, a variation or abbreviation, or an equivalent in another language while providing or offering to provide health care in Ontario unless that person is registered with our College, the College of Chiropractors of Ontario, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario, or the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario.

Unregistered Practitioners

Sometimes, the College receives information about unregistered practitioners claiming to be an optometrist or engaging in the practise of optometry in Ontario without being authorized to do so.

Individuals that have come to the attention of the College will be listed below:

VERIFY REGISTRATION STATUS

You are encouraged to use our public register, Find an Optometrist, to confirm that an individual is qualified to deliver eye care.

Please contact the College at complaints@collegeoptom.on.ca if you are aware of an individual that might be posing as an optometrist and/or are concerned that a person may be providing optometry services in Ontario without being registered with the College.
